In his address to the UN General Assembly on Friday, September 24, 2010, the president of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ahmadinejad caused a stir when he hypothesised that the 9/11 incident was orchestrated by the US government. Barack Obama called the speech 'offensive, hateful inexcusable' and went on to address the Iranian people via an interview with the BBC-Persian Radio in a deliberate move o humiliate the Iranian leadership. In reality, what Ahmadinejad did was to echo the concern of many who still doubt the official version of the 9/11 event. By labeling the doubt as just a conspiracy theory and appending it to the list of other events with mysterious circumstances will not let it to rest. The public need and deserve a more transparent and objective investigation of the event - an event which changed the world in a profound manner.
1. That some people doubt the official version of the event, that it was a terrorist attack, perpetrated by the Al-Qaeda, holds merits.
2. The event occurred in the first year of the tenure of the most conservative and anti-Islam president of USA the world had seen. George Bush saw himself as being the leader his god had appointed to lead his people and the world. He surrounded himself with neoconservative advisers, backed by the ultra-conservative policy think tank, the American Enterprise Institute, with its New Pan American Century agenda.
3. The 9/11 fit very well into the grand scheme that Bush seemed to design for his administration. During the rest of his 8-year term he reaped the harvest from the seed of evil which he had sowed. The event - especially the official version - had become a (convenient) prelude to launching his neocon agenda. He did not have to do hard-selling, and he just went on the offensive - at times seemed trigger-happy, wanton killings- while receiving sympathies. He passed hateful comments - far worse than Ahmadinejad's - with impunity; still remember the phrase 'crusade' and 'bring 'em on' hurtling from his foul mouth. Psychologists tell us that slips of tongue, which Bush had claimed they were, actually reveal the subconscious thoughts and intentions, and that subconscious constructs are more serious than the conscious in dictating one's actions and habits!
4. Two major wars have been a direct consequence of 9/11. Both have consumed hundreds of thousands of, possibly a million, lives. They are still ravaging today, with no clear end in sight. They threaten world peace.
5. Just because the victims of the reactions to 9/11 have been Muslims does not mean the west should turn a blind eye to the dark episode. If the US, and its western allies, insist that Muslims pay for the crime of 9/11, they have got more than what they should have wished for. Yet the ominous thing is that what we have seen thus far is just the beginning. The offence against the Muslims worldwide is an on-going business and 9/11 is the special excuse to do that.
6. Given the background painted above, Ahmadinejad is more than justified to call into question the actual culprits behind the crime that has become the basis for a bigger crime. He is the only world leader brave enough to risk being labelled 'hateful and offensive'.
7. Instead of walking out of the session, the US and the western world should have responded positively and taken it as a challenge upon themselves to provide an explanation. They owe the Muslims - and the silent majority in the international community - a transparent and objective investigation of the event that has been used to justify actions that have caused so much misery and pain to them.
8. The official inquiry done by the Bush administration has left so much wanting. In particular, the investigation has taken it as premise that it was a terrorist attack. Furthermore, many strange circumstances shrouded the event. If indeed the planning for the 9/11 crime took place in the caves of Afghanistan, how could it be that one of the first acts of the Bush regime in response was to obliterate those said 'evidences' using the 'daisy cutters', non-nuclear bombs exacting no less damages.
9. No matter who planned and executed 9/11, it is clear that the evil agenda of the neocons had been greatly served. Indeed an undeniable fact is that the Bush government had taken advantage of 9/11 to promote its anti-Islam agenda.
10. The response by the US administration and the western leaders means that one cannot question the official version of 9/11 just as one cannot question the Holocaust. The truth does no matter anymore. Might is right. The entire world, then, is steadily moving from an era of light into the abyss of darkness.
